About this product

The kit measures iron in freshwater or marine water to less than 0.05 mg/L. Can also measure chelated iron. MultiTest Iron performs over 75 tests and contains a reference sample for validation.

Iron Normal range

  1. Using the supplied spoon, add one level measure of Iron Reagent to a cavity of the test plate.
  2. Fill sample pipette to base of bulb and dispense to a test cavity of the test plate. Repeat, adding to same cavity. Stir briefly with straight end of spoon.
  3. Compare color to color chart after 2–5 minutes. For chelated iron, allow color to develop for 30 to 45 minutes or until the color no longer darkens.
  4. Promptly dispose of completed test solutions by rinsing test cavity under running water. If the test plate becomes stained, soak or clean with a dilute bleach cleaner, then rinse well.

Iron Low range

  1. Using the supplied spoon, add one level measure of Iron Reagent to one of the low range cuvettes.
  2. Fill this low range cuvette (from the previous step) to within 1 cm (0.5 inches) from the top with sample. Cap and invert to mix. Fill the other low range cuvette with clean water. This is your blank sample.
  3. Compare color to color chart after 5–10 minutes. Match color by viewing from top to bottom (not side to side) against a white background. Place the blank sample cuvette next to the sample cuvette so that you can better distinguish the small changes in color in the low range. For chelated iron, allow color to develop for 30 to 45 minutes or until the color no longer darkens.
  4. Divide the result by 4.

Reference test

The proper performance of the Seachem MultiTest Iron kit may be validated by running a test in the normal manner except that the reference sample is used in place of aquarium sample. It is not necessary to run a reference test to use this kit. The only time you might choose to run a reference test is if you have cause to believe the test is giving incorrect results. If you run a test using the reference sample and obtain the correct result (based on the known reference value provided) then you know the test is giving correct results. To run a reference test, add 1 drop of the Iron Reference Stock to 1 L (1 quart) of RO, deionized, or distilled water. Rinse the sample pipette well after adding this one drop. Then use this prepared reference solution as the sample in the iron test. Reference value is 0.4 mg/L.

Hints

If no iron is present the solution will have a slight yellow color.

Interpretation

This kit measures both ionic and most chelated iron. Iron is important in planted aquaria and should be maintained between 0.1 to 0.2 mg/L. Iron is of no importance in fish only aquaria. However, iron over 0.5 mg/L may be toxic to some species and should be avoided. Under normal conditions, iron is virtually impossible to maintain at measurable concentrations in seawater. Natural seawater concentration for iron is about 0.01 mg/L, a concentration barely detectable by this kit.
